Information After graduating I joined Price Waterhouse where I spent 3 years qualifying as a chartered accountant, based in the Financial Services division.
Shortly after qualifying I joined Rothschild where I spent 5 years - I initially worked in the mergers and acquisitions team and then moved into debt restructuring.
I moved in 2006 to UBS to join their re-launched restructuring and growth capital team where I focus on helping companies in pre-bankruptcy either by refinancing (often through non-bank debt) or by advising on available options.
Things I Wish I'd Known Accountancy provides a great base from which to move into many different areas, you can qualify and consider where you want to be whilst experiencing the working world.
It enables you to put off the career decision without impacting your CV - I rather fell into accountancy like many other Durham graduates but my qualification is seen as a plus on my CV.
There are several routes into the City and it doesn't have to be via the analyst programme (if you are thinking of going this route you really need to have summer internship experience).
The City isn't as bad as all the articles / books that demonise it - you have to work hard and play hard but there are significant benefits.
