Things I Wish I'd Known Decide what your life goals are; these might not be the same as your work goals.
If your work is important to you, decide where you are going and how you will get there. You only ever work for one firm and that is yourself - you are MD and HR director and you alone determine the image of that firm and where its going; no one will ever tell you.

Get a mentor.

The more you care about others the more successful you will be, but also be aware that an ounce of image is worth a pound of ability. Also be aware that ability does not necessarily guarantee success. Always try to stretch yourself a bit even though this can be painful because you will learn from it; you may be the best bottle washer in the kitchen but that won't make you the chef.

Enjoy your days at Durham to the full then put it behind you; few people are interested in what you have achieved in the past; its the "now" that counts. Oh, and try to remember that when you are asked to go for drinks, not all the world acts the way that they do in Grey bar.
