Information Graduating in 1998 with little idea of what I wanted to do except take a year off to go travelling, I got my first experience of banking while temping at HSBC, Lloyds and Abbey National before moving to investment banking. I qualified as an accountant while working for Deutsche Bank, then took a year out to do an MSc. before moving to Credit Suisse and then to J.P. Morgan. Having spent 13 years at JPM in a variety of roles including credit risk management, credit trading and prime brokerage, and a couple of years in Singapore,
I have recently changed tack and am re-training to be a secondary school maths teacher.
Things I Wish I'd Known Internships are really good – I wish I'd done them rather than working in a pub. You can get paid pretty well to figure out whether you have a real interest in the job or not. And even if it turns out that you hate it at the time, it still looks great on the CV.
It can be difficult to take long breaks in a career – far easier to take a gap year before you start
There are lots of different things to do in an investment bank – it's not just sales, trading and M&A.
