Information I joined The Chemical Society(later the Royal Society of Chemistry) in 1968 , as Editorial Assistant, to maintain the link with my degree subject. I later progressed to being Editor(Books)[Tertiary reviews fom literature] and then Editor,Natural Product Reports.
When the Society moved offices from London to the Cambridge area in 1989, I joined the Publishing Service of the International Maritime Organization in editorial posts. After a trial period, I became Editor (English).
Both of these organisations offer very limited scope for a change of career path.

Things I Wish I'd Known When I joined the Chemistry Society, there was no formal training- if you couldn't pick it up in a reasonable time, you left !! Things are , no doubt, rather different now .

The level of importance which computing skills would assume!By the end of my time with the Chemistry Society, a few managers were starting to use desktop computers, alongside the mainframe (based in Nottingham) which stored Chemical Abstracts. During my time with the International Maritime Organization . computers became increasingly ubiquitous. It was essential to pick up new methods as these became available.
