Information I've worked as an Engineering Consultant since leaving Durham (7 years in May 05), but have been on extended secondments to a contractor (DragagesBouyguesAsia), client (Railtrack) and project manager (Rail Link Engineering) organisations.

I've worked in Hong Kong, India, Algeria, Mexico and extensively in the UK.

I'm currently Treasuer of the Engineering Group of the Geological Society and International Association of Enginering Geology and the Environment, UK Branch.
Things I Wish I'd Known The BSc Geology at Durham involved no taught Engineering Geology (mainly traditional geology subjects), even though most geologists end up working in engineering (after decline of oil/gas industry). I wasn't aware the career existed at the time! Things may have changed...

I moved into Geotechnical Engineering from a Geology background, which is not the norm and quite difficult to do. Most people come from Civil Engineering degrees.

I did my first MSc straight after my BSc in Durham, however I've recently taken an additional MSc and think that it was much more beneficial 2nd time around (after having a few years work experience behind you).

I wished that I'd learnt how to touch-type at Uni, and spent more time on languages. They will come in useful no matter what you end up doing!
