| Things I Wish I'd Known | Graduates are not universally welcomed and you may need to develop a thick skin fast. I went to a staff communication meeting in the first week of my first job only to have to listen to the Sales Director expound on how worthless graduates are and that they expect everything on a plate without having to work for it. I had to work hard to overcome his attitude but thankfully the colleagues I worked closely with were much more open minded. Still, I had not been prepared for that. Some companies still have an archaic attitude to women. You may have to bite your tongue. Check out the terms of the contract thoroughly. Although I knew the contractual holiday entitlement when I started it turned out I wasn't eligible to take any holiday for four months! After nine week terms that was a struggle. |
